Common Warning Signs in Your Ear to Watch For
- Pain or Discomfort
Persistent ear pain — especially if it worsens or feels sharp — is often one of the first signs of an ear infection. The pain may also spread to your jaw, neck, or head. - Discharge or Fluid
If you see fluid, pus, or blood coming from your ear, this is a clear indication of an infection or injury. The discharge might have an unpleasant smell as well. - Hearing Loss or Ringing
Sudden changes in hearing, muffled sounds, or persistent ringing (tinnitus) can signal an ear problem, including infections. - Swelling or Redness
Swelling, redness, or warmth around the ear or ear canal may indicate inflammation or infection. - Fever and General Malaise
If ear symptoms are accompanied by a fever, headache, or general feeling of being unwell, this might mean the infection is more serious.
Common Ear Infections and Causes
- Otitis Media (Middle Ear Infection): Often caused by bacteria or viruses, this is common in children but can affect adults too.
- Otitis Externa (Swimmer’s Ear): An infection of the ear canal, usually caused by water trapped in the ear.
- Earwax Impaction: Excess earwax can trap bacteria and lead to infection.
- Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: Blockage of the tube that connects the middle ear to the throat can cause pressure and pain.
