What’s the best way to clean a shower curtain? I can’t afford to keep changing it, and it’s so embarrassing when people come over!

Step 2: The Washing Machine Method (Yes, Really!)

This is the easiest and most effective way to clean most shower curtains — including plastic ones!

You’ll Need:

  • Your dirty shower curtain
  • 1–2 bath towels (to prevent tearing and help scrub)
  • ½ cup of baking soda
  • ½ cup of white vinegar
  • Mild laundry detergent

How to Do It:

  1. Remove the curtain from the rings (leave the rings out for now).
  2. Toss it in the washer with a couple of old towels.
  3. Add ½ cup baking soda and a small amount of laundry detergent.
  4. Wash on a gentle cycle with warm water.
  5. Right before the rinse cycle, add ½ cup white vinegar.
  6. After the cycle, hang it up immediately to dry — either back in the shower or outside.

Important: Don’t put plastic or vinyl curtains in the dryer — they can melt. Fabric curtains can usually handle low heat, but check the label.

Step 3: No Washing Machine? No Problem. Try This Tub Soak Method

If you don’t have a washer, or just prefer hand-cleaning:

What You’ll Need:

  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • A sponge or scrub brush
  • Warm water

Instructions:

  1. Fill your tub or a large basin with warm water and ½ cup vinegar.
  2. Remove the curtain and soak it for 30 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle baking soda directly onto any stained or grimy areas.
  4. Use a sponge to scrub those spots clean.
  5. Rinse thoroughly and hang to dry.

Bonus Tip: Clean the Shower Curtain Rings Too

They’re often overlooked — but they collect grime too! Soak them in warm, soapy water with a little vinegar, then rinse and dry before reattaching them.
