The Initial Scene: A Tip Too Small?
At the end of a busy shift, the waiter checked the bill from a recent table. The tip was $3.28 on a $45 tab — roughly 7%, well below the customary 15-20%. Naturally, irritation crept in.

The Unexpected Letter
Days later, an envelope arrived — addressed to the waiter, handwritten, no return address. Inside was a heartfelt letter from the customer who’d left the small tip.
The letter explained that the $3.28 was not the tip — it was the exact amount of change the customer had on them after paying for the meal. They were a struggling student working multiple jobs and wanted to show appreciation but simply couldn’t afford more.
The letter also included a sincere apology for any misunderstanding and an invitation to understand their situation better.
