Refrigerator leaks water, slows down cooling

💧 Part 1: Why Is My Refrigerator Leaking Water?

1. Clogged or Frozen Defrost Drain

This is the #1 cause of fridge leaks.

Most refrigerators have a defrost cycle that melts ice off the evaporator coils. That water normally drains out through a small hole. If that drain is clogged or frozen, the water backs up and drips inside the fridge or under it.

What to look for:

  • Puddle inside the fridge (usually bottom shelf or crisper drawer)
  • Ice buildup in back panel
  • Water pooling underneath the fridge

What to do:

  • Unplug the fridge
  • Locate the defrost drain (usually in the back of the freezer)
  • Flush it with warm water or a turkey baster
  • Use a pipe cleaner or wire to gently clear blockages
