The Secret Behind Cracker Barrel’s Best Dishes
Turns out, some of Cracker Barrel’s most iconic dishes — the ones I’ve ordered 100 times without question — have simple secrets. And best of all? You can recreate them at home. So I decided to dig a little deeper, test a few recipes, and bring the magic to my own kitchen.
Spoiler alert: it worked. And I’ve never looked at Cracker Barrel the same way again.
🍲 Cracker Barrel Hashbrown Casserole (Copycat Recipe)
You can’t talk Cracker Barrel without mentioning the Hashbrown Casserole. Creamy, cheesy, and downright addictive — this dish has a fanbase of its own.
Ingredients:
- 1 (32 oz) bag frozen shredded hash browns, thawed
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
- 2 cups shredded Colby cheese (or cheddar)
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- Salt & pepper to taste
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, combine soup, sour cream, cheese, onion, and butter.
- Fold in the hash browns and mix well.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- Spread into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes or until golden and bubbly.
The Secret I Never Knew: Cracker Barrel actually uses Colby cheese, not cheddar! That slightly milder flavor gives it that classic creamy taste without overwhelming the dish.
🥞 Cracker Barrel Buttermilk Pancakes (Copycat Recipe)
These pancakes are so fluffy and buttery, they barely need syrup (though let’s be real — we’re still using syrup).
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- Butter for the skillet
Directions:
- Whisk dry ingredients in one bowl and wet ingredients in another.
- Combine the two until just mixed — don’t over stir!
- Heat a buttered skillet over medium heat.
- Pour 1/4 cup of batter per pancake. Flip when bubbles form.
- Cook until golden and serve warm.
What I Didn’t Know: The trick is to use fresh buttermilk and real melted butter in the batter. It makes the pancakes richer and softer, just like at Cracker Barrel. Also, they let their batter sit for a few minutes to let the bubbles form naturally. Game-changer.
