🛒 Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk (or half-and-half for extra richness)
- 1 jar (2.5 oz) dried beef, chopped
- Fresh ground black pepper, to taste
- Toasted bread slices (white, wheat, sourdough — your choice)
👩🍳 How to Make It
- Make a simple roux
In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly to eliminate the raw flour taste. - Add the milk
Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently, until the sauce begins to thicken. - Add the beef
Stir in the chopped dried beef. Let it simmer for another 3–5 minutes, allowing the flavors to come together and the sauce to reach your desired thickness. - Season and serve
Add a good crack of black pepper (no need for salt — the beef is salty enough!). Spoon the creamy beef mixture generously over hot, toasted bread.
💡 Tips & Variations
- Too salty? Rinse the dried beef in warm water and pat dry before chopping.
- Add flavor with a pinch of garlic powder, onion powder, or a dash of Worcestershire sauce.
- Upgrade it by serving over biscuits or mashed potatoes instead of toast.
- Spice it up with a few dashes of hot sauce or a sprinkle of paprika.
