Two Years After My Husband’s Death, I Finally Dared to Sort Through His Belongings in the Garage — What I Found Changed My Life

The garage had been my no-go zone for almost two years.
After my husband, David, passed away, I couldn’t bring myself to walk inside — not even for a moment. The mere thought of facing his workbench, his tools, his old fishing gear, and the half-finished projects he had left behind filled me with a heaviness I couldn’t describe.

Every time I opened that door, I could almost hear him humming to himself, see him bent over a project, smiling at me when I came in with a cup of coffee. The smell of sawdust and motor oil was still there, as if time had stopped the day he died. So I closed the door — literally and emotionally — and told myself, I’ll deal with it later.

But “later” turned into months, and months into years.
