Why You Should Clean Your Pillow Filling
Even if your pillow looks fine on the outside, its filling can harbor:
- Dust mites
- Sweat and body oils
- Dead skin cells
- Allergens
Regularly cleaning your pillow filling can improve sleep quality, reduce allergy triggers, and extend the life of your pillow.
Step 1: Identify Your Pillow Type
- Down or feather pillows: Gentle cleaning is needed to avoid clumping.
- Memory foam: Usually cannot be submerged in water; use spot cleaning or baking soda.
- Polyester or synthetic fill: Can typically be washed more aggressively in a washing machine.
Step 2: Washing Your Pillow Filling
For machine-washable fillings (synthetic or down/feather):
- Remove the pillowcase and any protectors.
- Use a gentle cycle with warm water and mild detergent.
- Add an extra rinse cycle to remove all soap residue.
- Dry completely—preferably in a dryer with tennis balls or dryer balls to keep the filling fluffy.
For memory foam or non-machine washable pillows:
- Spot clean with a mixture of mild detergent and water.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the pillow to absorb odors. Let it sit for 30 minutes.
- Vacuum or shake off the baking soda.
- Allow to air dry completely in a ventilated area.
