I grew up very poor.

4. Bread Pudding

Nothing went to waste. Stale bread became dessert when mixed with milk, sugar, and a single egg. We baked it until it puffed and browned, sometimes adding raisins if someone had given us a handful. It tasted like a treat fit for a feast.

Looking back, I realize that being poor taught me something precious — how to make beauty from scarcity. These recipes aren’t just food; they’re lessons in gratitude and resilience. Today, I can afford more, but when I make these dishes, I’m reminded of where I came from — and how every meal shared around that little table was rich in love.
