Why Eggshells Are More Valuable Than You Think
An eggshell is composed of about 95% calcium carbonate, a mineral also found in limestone and shells. It also contains trace minerals like magnesium, fluoride, and protein compounds that strengthen the shell.
Instead of letting this natural calcium source go to waste, you can easily extract its benefits using nothing more than hot water.
What Happens When You Immerse Eggshells in Hot Water
1. The Water Becomes “Calcium Tea”
Hot water helps dissolve small amounts of calcium carbonate from the shells. After steeping, the water becomes infused with minerals that can be used in several practical ways.
2. The Shells Are Sanitized
Boiling water disinfects the shells, making them safe for uses around food, plants, or even DIY beauty treatments.
How to Make Eggshell Infused Water (“Calcium Water”)
You’ll need:
- 5–6 clean eggshells
- 1 liter of hot or boiling water
Instructions:
- Rinse the shells after cracking the eggs to remove egg white residue.
- Boil or heat water to just below a rolling boil.
- Add the eggshells to the hot water.
- Let steep for 12–24 hours.
- Strain the liquid and store it in a clean jar or bottle.
This mineral-rich water can now be used in multiple ways!
How to Use Eggshell Water
1. Feed Your Plants
Plants—especially tomatoes, peppers, and indoor plants—love calcium.
Use the cooled eggshell water to water your plants once every 2–4 weeks. This helps:
- Prevent blossom-end rot
- Strengthen stems
- Improve root development
2. Enrich Compost
Add the used eggshells (crushed) into your compost bin. They break down slowly and add long-term mineral support.
3. Clean and Deodorize
Calcium water can help cut mild odors or act as a gentle mineral cleaner on surfaces.
Crushed shells can also be used as a mild abrasive scrub for pots and pans.
4. Fortify Homemade Pet Food
