The Rediscovery

It started with a simple mission: clean out the freezer. Nothing dramatic—just the annual ritual of tossing ancient vegetables and reorganizing the ice cream. But as I dug deeper, there it was: a perfectly shaped rectangle, wrapped like a gift from the past.

Inside the foil lay Grandma’s famous potato-cheese-ham casserole, lovingly assembled during the last holiday season we spent together before the world turned upside down.

For a moment, I hesitated. Could it be revived? Should it be revived?

One thing was certain: Grandma never made a dish that went to waste.

The Weeklong Thaw

Unlike the frozen pizzas and bags of peas that thaw overnight, this dish required patience.
I moved it to the fridge and let time do the work.

Day 1: Still a rock.
Day 3: Slightly soft at the corners.
Day 5: Recognizable casserole shape returning.
Day 7: Finally ready.

It felt like a time capsule slowly reawakening.
