What Is the Meaning of Wearing Anklets?
Let’s explore the significance behind wearing anklets — from ancient symbolism to modern style statements.
A Brief History of Anklets
Anklets date back as far as 6,000–8,000 years ago. Archaeological evidence shows women in ancient Egypt, India, and Mesopotamia wearing them for both ornamental and symbolic purposes. In ancient Egypt, anklets were worn by women of all classes. Gold or silver anklets indicated wealth and status, while simpler ones made of leather or shells were worn by commoners.
In India, anklets (known as payal or pajeb) have been deeply embedded in tradition and are still worn widely today, especially in classical dance, weddings, and religious ceremonies.
